Solid Rock Celebrates Old And New Appointments
A new addition has been added to the pastoral leadership at Solid Rock United Methodist Church. The church family at Solid Rock has opened their arms to embrace the newly appointed associate pastor, the Rev. Dr. Donna Thompson. The church family also re-embraces the current associate pastor, the Rev. Michael Bass, who returns for his third year of service and lead pastor, the Rev. Gilliam Wise, who returns for his 10th year of service.
This union was celebrated during morning worship on June 28 with a brief covenant service, in which the congregation agreed to receive and support the new associate pastor and continue supporting the returning pastors.
When asked about the mission of Solid Rock, Lead Pastor Gil Wise stated, “Our mission at Solid Rock is developing community by developing people, and people are developed by introducing them to Jesus Christ. This disciple-making mission is the motivating force behind every aspect of ministry at Solid Rock.”
Each member of the ministry team focuses on a particular area of ministry in order to accomplish the goal of “winning people to Jesus.” Rev. Thompson, the newest member of the ministry team, will focus on developing the newly envisioned Abundant Life Center. Through the center, members of the church and individuals in the community will participate in a variety of events ranging from classes in the arts, to resume writing and interviewing skills, to health issues.
The events are designed to help individuals grow spiritually, intellectually, creatively and emotionally. Rev. Thompson also will be working in the area of grant writing and worship renewal. She is passionate about all areas of ministry, especially worship. “Worship is the foundation for transformation,” she said.
Rev. Bass is dean for the accredited Solid Rock School of Theology where individuals can receive degrees ranging from an associate to the doctorate level. The school currently enrolls 50 students with a goal of reengaging the average lay person in theological discussions. Rev. Bass is author of the book “Gospel of Grace.” Bible study at Solid Rock is coordinated through the School of Theology. Rev. Bass also gives oversight to the large Internet community that is associated with Solid Rock.
Rev. Wise is the founding pastor of Solid Rock. He has a vision for reaching the lost and discipling believers into a deeper walk of faith in Christ. Pastor Wise is also the chief executive officer for Solid Foundations Inc., is chancellor for the Solid Rock School of Theology and serves the community on many boards and agencies.
“God has assembled a fantastic team of pastors at Solid Rock,” said Pastor Wise. “This community of faith is reaching thousands of individuals every week through ministry and worship. I could not do it all without this team.”
In addition to the three appointed pastors, other ministers who serve on the ministry team at Solid Rock are: the Rev. Danteí Poole, lay pastor; the Rev. Clark Barfield, retired; the Rev. Janet Buffalo and the Rev. Michael Sadtler.
Every fifth Sunday at Solid Rock other churches are invited to a service called “Come and See.” The event hosts churches and their pastors for worship followed with a catered luncheon. The luncheon is highlighted with presentations by the ministers and ministries of Solid Rock.
The next “Come and See” will be held on Aug. 30. Churches that would like to attend need to make reservations as soon as possible. These events fill up early so register by calling the church office at (919) 498-2139.
