First Midway Area Community Day Celebration To Be Held Saturday

Posted in Weekly Church News at 9:34 am by The Daily Record

Midway Area Churches Association (MAC) will hold its first community day celebration at old Midway High School on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m.
According to the event’s coordinator, Andy Shaffer, who is program director of MAC, the celebration is an opportunity for youth to celebrate the end of school.
“We’re trying to reach the kids who might not be in a church,” Mr. Shaffer said. “There are so many negatives in our world today so we’re trying to give them something positive to enjoy.”
The event is to include free food and drinks provided by local churches, inflatables and live music by Praise Out Loud. Drawings for door prizes will be held every 15 minutes. Prizes include giftcards to McDonald’s, iTunes and Wal-Mart, as well as gas cards and other prizes.
Former Miami Dolphins running back turned youth pastor Leonard Henry, who also played at Clinton High School and East Carolina University, will be the speaker for the event. “He played football and a lot of kids look up to football players,” Mr. Shaffer said. “We hope they see people like him love the Lord and are willing to tell people about Him.”
According to the Rev. Johnny Peterson, president of MAC and pastor of Mt. Caramel PFWB, the MAC will also give away 250-300 boxes of food on a first-come, first-serve basis in an effort to give back to the community.
Rev. Peterson and fellow pastors formed MAC, a coalition of nearly 212 churches in the Midway area,  last August to focus on strengthening the community church itself, rather than individual congregations.
“We want to put the church back into the community,” Rev. Peterson said. “We are all God’s people no matter our background or what we’ve done.  We just want everyone to know that God loves them.”
Mr. Shaffer said the association looks past denominations and focuses especially on young people.
“We’re trying to do things for our young people,” Mr. Shaffer said. “These are churches who believe in coming together across denominational lines and not trying to build our own congregations.”
“We’re working together to reach people and make a difference in their lives,” he added.
Last August the group held a community prayer for schools.
“We had about 650 to come out and pray,” Rev. Peterson said.
MAC sponsored a “fifth quarter” event after Midway High School’s home football games, providing students with food and music.
“Fifth quarter was a place where kids could go to celebrate so they weren’t out on the streets,” Mr. Shaffer said.
MAC looks to plan another event for students in the fall and to make the community celebration an annual event.
