The Rev. Laura Johnson is pictured with her husband, Allen.
• New pastor at Hood Memorial Christian Church.
Q: You were once a Baptist pastor. Why did you change denominations?
A: I do have experience as a female pastor of a dually aligned Southern Baptist Convention and Cooperative Baptist Fellowship church, and it was a wonderful experience at the congregational level. However, many in the larger community of Baptists and the general population in the Southeast couldn’t bring themselves to fully appreciate the gifts that a woman brings to pastoral ministry. After completing my fifth unit of clinical pastoral education (CPE), I decided that continuing as a Baptist was not necessary for my Christian identity.
Q: So how did you choose the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)?
A: My mother-in-law and father-in-law, Mrs. Vera and Dr. Paul Johnson, gave me a hand-me-down book about choosing a church. Using the book, I compared all the Protestant denominations and tried to match one with my own place of theological comfort.
Q: What specifically attracted you to the Disciples of Christ?
A: Four primary aspects of the Disciples of Christ practices stand out. First would be the requirement that we respect other people’s interpretation of Scripture. It’s so refreshing to be with people who don’t argue about the Bible. Second would be the practice of weekly communions open to all believers … . Third would be our acceptance of baptisms from other traditions. For me baptism is the work of the Holy Spirit, and it is not my place to tell someone else that they need to do it over again just so they can be a member of our fellowship. And fourth would be the great support of female clergy with our general minister and president also being a female.
Q: You have a diverse background — from being in the Army Reserves to writing technical manuals to hospice, hospital, and Civil Air Patrol (CAP) chaplaincy — how do you settle into the role of being a church pastor?
A: I like to tell people that the most important quality of someone considering pastoral ministry is liking dogs. Seriously, if a person doesn’t like dogs, home visitation would be a real challenge. Fortunately, I love dogs — big ones, small ones, even stinky ones. After loving dogs, other training is helpful. I do find that the leadership training that I receive from my military background and my current CAP assignment does aid me in church administration. Having an English major and previously working with stressful deadlines for multiple book projects is helpful every week as next Sunday’s sermon begins staring me down on Monday morning and pressuring me by Thursday. And all my training in hospice and hospital chaplaincy, including my units of CPE in a psychiatric setting, provide resources for me during pastoral counseling sessions and pastoral care visits. I don’t think one moment of my education or past experience is wasted — not even those college days waiting tables.
Q: Hood Memorial Christian Church celebrates its 120th anniversary this year. What do you see in the church’s future?
A: We are planning ways we can reach out to our community with the love of Christ and bring new people into our fellowship. And we are doing physical labor inside our church structure to improve our facility so we can grow. We have the space for many more ministries, we just need to improve upon the building a little.
Q: Does the church have special events planned for spring 2009?
A: We are offering a Lenten Bible study each Wednesday through April 1 at noon with a soup and sandwich lunch. … My installation service is planned for Sunday, and our regional minister, Dr. John Richardson, will preach. We will have a special communion and passion reading on Maundy Thursday, April 9.
Q: What would you want the community of Dunn to know about you that they might not have learned already?
A: My testimony is so dramatic, most people who hear it say I should write a book. I haven’t decided to do that for a general audience, but I hope everyone will know this about me: I am a child of God, and I am chosen by God for ministry. I know my life as a Christian and as a minister matters most to my loving God who will not say, “Look how far you still have to go,” but will instead say, “My child, look how far you’ve come.”
